Which Way? Cuckoo Way!

Signpost for the Cuckoo Way

Signpost in Staveley

“The Cuckoo Way” signposted from Staveley, near Chesterfield.

You can walk all the way to West Stockwith Basin (mostly following the towpath of the Chesterfield Canal) where the canal meets the River Trent.

The canal from Staveley to Chesterfield is navigable but “land locked” at present. It is being restored very slowly, and we like to visit regularly to see what progress has been made.

The Cuckoo Way is named after the boats which would have worked it many years ago.

We parked for free at Staveley Hall, where we found a lovely coffee shop, and a craft shop nearby.

The new lock and canal basin look very smart and there is evidence that work is still being done.

I look forward to seeing holiday boats on that stretch of the canal but it will be a long wait. In the meantime there is a trip boat that operates on certain days from Tapton Lock in Chesterfield.
